Trip to St. Hansted Aa

In my childhood we drove by St. Hansted Å a thousand times. My granddad grew up in this area and my great-grandfather was the manager of a small hydro plant on St. Hansted Å at Lundum. It is therefore a little bit funny that I never fished this stream before, but as I was going home to visit my parent anyway the opportunity was there.

Now it’s a little late in the season for sea trouts in this kind of stream, but dryfly fishing for brown trouts is just my game on an early summer day.

”Horsens og omegns sportsfiskeforening” issues day licenses for parts of St. Hansted Å , Lille Hansted Å and a part of Gudenåen near Åle. You can find more info at their homepage (in danish though).

So on Friday the 13 (scary) me and my father went fishing and parked at Skanderborgvej (marked on the map at the end of this blog). We started by fishing the stretch from Skanderborgvej towards Horsens. The first 200 – 300 meters is in the woods and can be fished from the north bank. The rest of the stretch is classic Danish agriculture landscape. As you can see in the video below, St. Hansted Å has a reasonably waterflow but at the moment not much depth (looking at the banks water has been running about 1 meter higher not too long ago).

Now I did not catch anything but we saw some activity from the brown trouts gunning for insects at the water mirror. So I might fish for “good advice” from the locals, because there was clearly fish here.

The stretch from Skanderborgvej away from Horsens had more twists and turns following a damming as it cuts through the meadows. This landscape it formed by the latest ice age and part of the stream is on old seabed were you can find seashells and other “fossils”

We did not get to fish Lille Hansted Å that day, and it may be a subject for another day of fishing near Horsens. We did have a look at it though, and it is more bended but also smaller than St. Hansted Å. It looked very nice, but at the moment there was not much water.

To sum it up…

We had a very nice day here and it clearly holds potential for a good trout. Next time I am going, it will be in prime sea trout season though.
